Umbra Ensemble was formed by female musicians bound together by a passion for ancient and new music. The ensemble’s repertoire features sacred and secular medieval tunes from Iceland and continental Europe, as well as traditional songs, typically performed to the ensemble’s original arrangements.
The group’s second album, Solstitium, won Record of the Year at the 2019 Icelandic Music Awards. The group has premiered contemporary music written for the ensemble, e.g. during the Reykjavík Arts Festival 2016, and collaborates on a regular basis with improvisation artists, visual and dance artists. The group has crafted its own musical world with a distinct sound and unique delivery.
